Staver’s Switcheroo: Religious Right Attorney Who Said Satanic Clubs Have A Right To Meet In Schools Now Might Sue To Stop Them

In a predictable twist, a prominent Religious Right attorney who recently said after public school Satanic clubs have a “right to meet” is now threatening to sue if those clubs are actually allowed to form.

As we reported earlier this week, the Satanic Temple is seeking to create “After School Satan Clubs” in public schools in several states in response to the activities of local Good News Clubs.

Venal Vandal

Susan Hemeryck strolled into the rotunda of the Florida State Capitol in Tallahassee Dec. 23 with a specific goal in mind: to destroy a religious display she didn’t like.

The target of Hemeryck’s wrath was a diorama erected by the Satanic Temple. The humanistic group, backed with legal firepower from Americans United for Separation of Church and State, sought and won permission to display at the rotunda a depiction of an angel falling into a pit of fire.

Devil's Advocate

Last month’s holiday season took on a new look in Florida after state officials agreed to allow the Satanic Temple to erect a display in the rotunda of the State Capitol in Tallahassee following intervention from Americans United.

Although officials had previously labeled the display “grossly offensive,” they reversed themselves after AU threatened to file a lawsuit on the Temple’s behalf.

Sympathy For The Devil? AU's Role In Fla. Display Flap Sparks Hellish Reaction

I must admit this: At various conventions and other speaking engagements, I sometimes use a prop that can best be described as a red sock monkey with devil horns.

I usually bring it out of a paper bag and say, “This represents the two things the Religious Right hates the most – Satan and evolution.” It usually gets a good laugh. No Satanist (and, for that matter, no monkey) has yet to complain about my use of these images.

Church-State Separation Watchdog Group Welcomes Reversal Of Policy

Americans United for Separation of Church and State today announced that officials in Florida have agreed to allow the Satanic Temple to erect a holiday display at the State Capitol in Tallahassee this month.

Although officials had previously labeled the display “offensive,” they reversed themselves after Americans United threatened to file a lawsuit on the Temple’s behalf.

Taboo In Tallahassee

Last December, the rotunda of the Florida State Capitol in Tallahassee hosted a number of privately erected holiday symbols.

Many were what you would expect to see in December: a Christmas tree, a nativity scene and a menorah.
