Orthodox Jewish Group Announces Major Push For School Aid In New York

A prominent group of Orthodox Jews announced recently that it will lobby legislators in New York to increase taxpayer funding for Jewish educa­tional institutions–even though this raises some serious constitu­tional concerns.

According to the Jewish Daily Forward, at the Orthodox Union’s (OU) an­nual conference in December, Execu­tive Vice President Allen Fagin cited the financial burden imposed by private school tuition as a reason for the move.

Apparently more than you might think. Last week, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a climate-change bill that allotted some hefty benefits to religious groups.

The measure, which was approved 219-212, included a provision that would provide subsidies to "faith-based" organizations and other non-profits to cover of up to 50 percent of the cost of retrofitting their energy systems.
