Liberty’s Latest Ploy: What’s Up With The Sanders Invite?

The announcement that U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) will speak at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., Sept. 14 has left a lot of people scratching their heads. Has the world been turned upside down?

From Sanders’ perspective, the move makes sense. He’s seeking the Democratic presidential nomination, and it never really hurts a candidate to go into the lion’s den and stare down the opposition. Many supporters will see that as an act of political courage; you can almost hear them holler, “Give ‘em hell, Bernie!”

Cruz Announces Candidacy For Presidency During Rally At Liberty University

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), a favorite of the Religious Right and the Tea Party, announced that he will run for president at a Lynchburg, Va., college founded by the late Rev. Jerry Falwell.

During a March 23 speech at Liberty University, which advertises itself as the “largest Christian university in the world,” Cruz explained why he is the best choice to save America from the ruin he believes President Barack Obama has caused.

Name Games: Judge Formerly Affiliated With Liberty University Delays Transgender Woman’s Name-Change Request

Jerry Falwell Jr’s Liberty University has long sought to rule the town of Lynchburg, Va., and while it never quite succeeded in a full-on takeover, fundamentalists associated with the school still wield considerable influence there.

Careless Counsel: Falwell Legal Group Offers Bad Advice On Churches And Politics

As election season heats up, we’re sure to see an increase in the number of houses of worship intervening in partisan politics by endorsing or opposing candidates.

Churches are tax-exempt nonprofits, and most pastors know this is illegal and inappropriate. But a small percentage – often prodded and provoked by Religious Right legal groups – is determined to violate federal tax law and drag partisanship into the pulpit.

Backdoor Endorsement: Liberty U. Chancellor Falwell Gives Romney A Boost

It seems Liberty University Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. just can’t help himself when it comes to political endorsements.

At the Lynchburg, Va., school’s graduation ceremony over the weekend, Falwell made sure to say that inviting Mitt Romney, the presumptive GOP candidate for president, in no way constituted an endorsement by the tax-exempt institution. He even said nonprofits like Liberty can’t endorse candidates for office, which is exactly right.

So what did Falwell do next?
