D.c. Mayor Flip-flops To Promote Vouchers

Plan Will Undermine Public Education in the District, says Americans United

Just days after reaffirming his opposition to President Bush's plan to bring school vouchers to D.C., Mayor Anthony Williams emerged from secret negotiations with the Education Department having traded his support for vouchers for promises of additional funds for D.C. public schools in the next budget. Congress will vote on D.C. vouchers soon.

"Mayor Williams has sold himself, and the future of Washington's children for empty promises from the Bush administration," said Americans United Executive Director Barry W. Lynn. "It is disgraceful to use the students of our nation's capitol as guinea pigs - particularly since all previous research shows that vouchers are an academic failure."

Lynn noted that the most recent studies on the topic of school vouchers from the University of Indiana have found that vouchers do not significantly improve student test scores.
