Subscribe to RSS - Religious Instruction during the School Day or 'Release Time'

The concept of release time, whereby students leave public school during the day for religious instruction offsite, was upheld by the Supreme Court in 1952. It’s important to remember, however, that public schools aren’t required to permit outside groups to run release-time programs. If a school chooses to do so, it should not promote the plan or encourage students to take part in it. In addition, schools should not punish students who choose not to take part. Students who don’t want to participate in release-time programs should not see their education suffer. They should be given meaningful instruction while the program runs.

AU To Supreme Court: Muslim Ban Violates Constitution’s Promise Of Religious Freedom And Fairness

Today, Americans United and our allies told the U.S. Supreme Court that President Donald Trump’s Muslim ban is an unconstitutional violation of America’s fundamental promise of religious freedom.

I noted the hypocrisy of the members of this movement, who are normally so quick to judge everyone else, in backing a man whose moral lapses are glaring and who clearly lacks the “biblical worldview” these folks claim to champion.

Even In The Wake Of Hurricanes, The Constitution Remains In Force

Those living in areas ravaged by Hurricane Harvey are just beginning to rebuild their lives and clean up, and those in the path of Hurricane Irma are just trying to comprehend its devastation. We at Americans United continue to be concerned about everyone recovering from or in the midst of these historic storms and have reached out to many of our members and supporters in these areas to let them know we are thinking of them.

Justice Department Tells Supreme Court That A Colo. Bakery Had The Right To Discriminate Against A Same-Sex Couple

Yesterday, the U.S. Department of Justice told the Supreme Court that a Colorado bakery has a constitutional right to refuse to sell a cake to a same-sex couple for their wedding. You read that right – the Trump administration thinks there’s a constitutional right to discriminate.

This Weekend, AU And Allies Are Countering Anti-Muslim Hate – And You Can Join In

After the massive Boston protests against white supremacy, ACT for America – the largest anti-Muslim hate group in the U.S. – decided to back out of its plan to hold multiple rallies in cities all over the nation. The group feared that its events would be overshadowed by successful counter-protests.
