The separation of church and state is firmly ingrained in the U.S. Constitution. Key founders such as Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and others supported this idea and insisted that only church-state separation could guarantee the freedom of all Americans. Church-state separation is thus not only an historic principle, it's also America's great gift to the world. Under the separation policy, Americans have enjoyed more religious freedom than any other people in history.

Believe it or not, it’s already August. And that means many of Americans United’s interns are wrapping up their church-state separation projects and getting ready to go back to school. The Texas legislature is back in a special session called by Governor Greg Abbott (R) and the Senate has wasted no time passing troubling measures. Last week, the Texas Senate approved two bills that threaten religious freedom – a private school voucher bill and an anti-transgender bathroom ban.

Shocking Headlines Elicit Yawns From The Religious Right

A few months ago, when news broke that President Donald J. Trump had given classified information to the Russians, I asked why Religious Right groups were remaining silent. They surely would have spoken up if a Democratic president had done that.

Today I have to ask that question again, in light of two recent incidents – Anthony Scaramucci’s profanity-laced rant to The New Yorker and Trump’s completely inappropriate speech to the Boy Scouts.
