Religious groups have the right to speak out on political and social issues. Federal law, however, prohibits most tax-exempt bodies, including houses of worship, from intervening in elections by endorsing or opposing candidates for public office. Churches are not political action committees and should not act like them. Religious leaders should abide by the law and refrain from turning their congregations into cogs in a political machine.

Project Fairplay

In 1996, Americans United launched Project Fair Play to educate religious leaders and other Americans about tax exemption and political activity. We send informational letters to clergy, and we file complaints with the IRS when there are egregious violations.

Nativity Scenes, Menorahs And Spaghetti Monsters: Equality Is The Solution To The ‘December Dilemma’

I did a radio show yesterday with a conservative host on the topic of religious holiday displays. Although we didn’t see eye to eye on the issue, he was polite, and we had a good discussion.

During debates over this issue, it quickly becomes apparent that some misperceptions exist about Americans United’s work in this area. Let’s take a look at a few:

The Religious Right Is Alienating People Of Color

The campaigns of candidates like Roy Moore and Donald J. Trump were plagued with accusations of sexual assault and subject to moral controversy, but despite this, one particular demographic remained their strongest allies – white Christian evangelicals.

Everyone In America Knows That Roy Moore Lost To Doug Jones – Except Roy Moore

One week ago, Alabama voters sent a shockwave through the world of politics by electing Democrat Doug Jones over “Ten Commandments judge” Roy Moore to an open U.S. Senate seat.

Moore is not taking the loss well. In fact, he has yet to concede.

On election night, Moore unleashed a rant, telling his supporters, “Realize when the vote is this close that it’s not over. … We also know that God is always in control.”

The Johnson Amendment Has Survived – Thanks To You!

After a months-long fight, we have good news: The final tax bill that the House and Senate will vote on next week will NOT contain language to repeal the Johnson Amendment. A big thank you to all of you who emailed and called your members of Congress and educated your friends and family about this issue. You are the ones who won this fight.
