Court Strikes Down N.J. Coach’s Religious Activity

As this issue of Church & State was going to press, a federal appeals court ruled that a New Jersey public school football coach does not have a constitutional right to engage in religious activity with students.

The 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled unanimously against Marcus Borden, who wanted to bow his head and “take a knee” with praying students. Borden had been directing and overseeing prayers with players for 23 years.
