Moon Web Site Spreads False Story On Sen. Barack Obama

An online publication owned by the Rev. Sun Myung Moon’s Unification Church garnered attention and derision for publishing an inaccurate and unsubstantiated article regarding two presidential contenders.

In January, the Internet Web site Insight published a story by an anonymous reporter using anonymous sources who claimed that researchers at Sen. Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign were about to go public with information about one of her rivals, Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.).

The Jan. 17 article claimed that Clinton’s staff planned to reveal that Obama had attended an Islamic religious school in Indonesia when he was a child. According to the Insight account, Clinton’s team would conclude that “the young Obama was enrolled in a Madrassa and was raised and educated as a Muslim.”

The New York Times and many other print and broadcast mediums reported that the Insight story was inaccurate and that Obama’s descriptions of the school as secular were verified. But Insight’s work was spread far via the help of Fox News, Rush Limbaugh and other right-wing talking heads and bloggers.

The Times reported Jan. 29 that Insight is “the last remnant of a defunct conservative print magazine owned by the Unification Church.”
