Moore Shenanigans: U.S. Supreme Court Rejects Alabama High Court’s Latest Bid To Undermine Equality

Spare a thought for Roy Moore.

Moore likely thought that as chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court he’d finally have the authority to enforce God’s moral law. Theocracy has, after all, been the raison d’etre of his career. But our secular legal system – or Satan, depending on who you ask – has thwarted him at every turn. Read more

Innocence Abused: A Lethal Combination Of Church And State Fails Pennsylvania’s Children

Last week, Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane released a damning grand jury report about the rampant sexual abuse of minors by priests in the Altoona-Johnstown Diocese – and the failure of anyone in authority to stop it.

News of the report hit me hard. I was born and raised in Altoona. For 16 years I attended a Catholic church in that diocese. I spent eight years in a Catholic school appended to one of its churches. Read more

Blocked From The Bench: ‘Christian Nation’ Advocate Rick Green Loses Bid To Join Texas Supreme Court

A crony of Religious Right pseudo-historian David Barton will not be joining the Texas Supreme Court.

Rick Green, a former Texas state representative and “Christian nation” advocate, narrowly lost his bid for the bench earlier this week to state Supreme Court incumbent Paul Green (no relation). This is at least the second time Rick Green has run unsuccessfully for the positon. Read more

Turbanned: Soldier Sues Army To Keep Religious Accommodation For Beard

A Sikh combat soldier has filed suit against the U.S. Army for forcing him to undergo special testing before granting him a religious accommodation for his beard and turban. Capt. Simratpal Singh, a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and a decorated veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom, says that Army authorities ordered him to report for three days of helmet and gas mask testing. Holy Hypocrites: The Religious Right And The Rise Of Trump

For political junkies, the Super Tuesday results offered a sumptuous repast.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) continue to duel for the Democratic nomination, although Clinton appears to be pulling away. On the Republican side, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) remained alive with victories in Texas, Oklahoma and Alaska. U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) looks to be on life support after winning only in Minnesota. Ohio Gov. John Kasich failed to carry a single state but has not dropped out. Ben Carson is an afterthought. Tax Troubles: Trump Claims IRS Targeted Him Because Of His ‘Strong Christian’ Faith

GOP presidential hopeful Donald Trump is awfully good at picking fights, and his latest opponent seems to be the Internal Revenue Service.

All high-profile presidential candidates are expected to release their tax returns at some point during the campaign, but Trump has yet to do so. He claims he can’t because he is a frequent target of audits, though it’s unclear why that would prevent him from showing his return to the public. Read more

The Bishop’s Cookie Crumbles: St. Louis Prelate Attacks Girl Scouts

Every now and then, far-right religious groups or their leaders decide to attack the Girl Scouts. I’m not sure why because it never works out for them. Despite this track record of failure, Roman Catholic Archbishop Robert J. Carlson of St. Louis decided to join the fray recently.

Carlson issued a letter asserting that the Girl Scouts “is exhibiting a troubling pattern of behavior and it is clear to me that as they move in the ways of the world it is becoming increasingly incompatible with our Catholic values.” Read more

Undeniable Falsehoods: Religious Right Group Releases New Report On The ‘Persecution’ of American Christians

An up-and-coming Religious Right legal group has a new name and a new look. The Texas-based Liberty Institute has rebranded itself First Liberty, and it has inaugurated its fresh look with a newly-released report that purportedly proves the existence of a wave of hostility toward American Christians.
