Private School Voucher Hearings This Week in Pennsylvania

The battle over the proposed Pennsylvania private school voucher program continues this week as the House Education Committee holds additional hearings on the issue in Harrisburg. The Committee will hear testimony regarding the proposal on Wednesday, August 17, and Thursday, August 18. We strongly encourage you to attend and support those speaking out against private school vouchers.

Confused Critics: Are You ‘An Enemy Of What Is Good About America’?

Did you know that I’m an “enemy of what is good about America”? And if you support Americans United, well, then you must be, too!

Who knew?

But that’s what Mark Ramsey, a blogger at Texas GOP Vote believes.

In a blog post, he asked:

“Why does the group Americans United for Separation of Church and State exist? They are enemies of what is good about America. Why does the ACLU exist? They are enemies of what made this country the envy of the world.”

My Way Or The Highway: In Campbell County, Va., It’s Pray To Jesus Or Get Out

The Campbell County Board of Supervisors holds sessions on the first Tuesday of each month in the basement of the Haberer Building in Rustburg, Va., and according to the board’s website, all meetings are open to the public.

But don’t expect to feel welcome there if you happen to hold the wrong views about religion.

Prelate Pressure: Baltimore Bishop Badgers Gov. On Marriage Equality – Unsuccessfully

A few miles from where I live is a highway called New Hampshire Avenue. As you drive north on this road, you pass Christian churches of just about every denomination, Jewish synagogues, a Muslim mosque, a Hindu temple and a Buddhist center. This stretch of road has been dubbed “the highway to Heaven.”

I’m happy to report that I have survived the weekend in Houston and “The Response.”

In case you missed it, “The Response” was a fundamentalist Christian rally put on last Saturday at Houston’s Reliant Stadium by Texas Gov. Rick Perry and the ultra-right-wing American Family Association. Americans United has been speaking out against this excessive government entanglement with religion for over a month now.

Military Victories: Non-Theist Event Approved At Fort Bragg, Sectarian Training At Vandenberg Nuked

Here’s some good news out of North Carolina: Officials at Fort Bragg have agreed to allow non-religious soldiers to sponsor a festival next year called “Rock Beyond Belief.” Army officials will give the festival’s organizers an appropriate outdoor venue and make it possible for them to promote the event on base and off.

‘Gee, Thanks, But I Have To Wash My Hair’: Governors Skip Perry Prayer Rally

Texas Gov. Rick Perry had big plans for his exclusionary Christian prayer rally this Saturday. He was so proud of the event that he invited all 49 other governors to attend.

The RSVPs to “The Response” have been trickling in, and it doesn’t look good. So far, the number of governors who plan to attend the event at Houston’s Reliant Stadium in person stands at exactly zero, notes the American Independent.
