Military Victories: Non-Theist Event Approved At Fort Bragg, Sectarian Training At Vandenberg Nuked

Here’s some good news out of North Carolina: Officials at Fort Bragg have agreed to allow non-religious soldiers to sponsor a festival next year called “Rock Beyond Belief.” Army officials will give the festival’s organizers an appropriate outdoor venue and make it possible for them to promote the event on base and off.

‘Gee, Thanks, But I Have To Wash My Hair’: Governors Skip Perry Prayer Rally

Texas Gov. Rick Perry had big plans for his exclusionary Christian prayer rally this Saturday. He was so proud of the event that he invited all 49 other governors to attend.

The RSVPs to “The Response” have been trickling in, and it doesn’t look good. So far, the number of governors who plan to attend the event at Houston’s Reliant Stadium in person stands at exactly zero, notes the American Independent.

Yielding To Censorship: Mo. School Board Bans Books That Are ‘Contrary To The Bible’

Kurt Vonnegut’s novel Slaughterhouse-Five is considered a modern classic. That doesn’t mean it’s a particularly easy read. Indeed, it deals with some fairly heady topics. When I first encountered it in high school, I wasn’t sure what to make of it. But it sure made me think, which, in my view, is what a good novel should do.

Funny thing about that thinking – some people see it as dangerous. And a few of those people sit on the school board in Republic, Mo.

Hypocrisy Alert: Ex-Christian Coalition Staffer Now Opposes Religious Control Of Courts – At Least For Muslims

When it comes to the Religious Right, the hypocrisy never ceases to amaze me.

Yesterday, on the eve of the Muslim observance of Ramadan, The New York Times published a story detailing the leaders and groups behind the recent push for anti-Shariah laws in state legislatures, and – shocker! – one is former Christian Coalition Field Director Guy Rodgers.

No Amen From Us: Perry Prayer Rally Gets Judge’s Approval, But Not Ours

I’m heading to Houston, folks! I’ll be accompanying Americans United Executive Director Barry W. Lynn as we join with the Texas ACLU and other progressive allies to put on a rally on the night before Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s fundamentalist Christian prayer fest.

Pulpit Priority: An Atlanta Pastor Says Churches Should Be Prophetic, Not Political

Americans United recently asked the Internal Revenue Service to investigate an El Paso ministry that is spearheading a recall campaign against that city’s mayor and two members of the city council.

Pastor Tom Brown has used his Tom Brown Ministries to coordinate the recall campaign. Brown is angry because Mayor John Cook and council members Steve Ortega and Susie Byrd voted to extend benefits to domestic partners. He is using the ministry’s website to promote the recall.

Pennsylvania Vouchers Hearing This Wednesday in Philadelphia

This Wednesday, the Pennsylvania House Education Committee will be holding a day-long hearing on the proposed statewide private school voucher program. This hearing is part of the Committee’s summer hearing series, which will take the Committee across the state. Usually, such events are held at the state capitol, in Harrisburg, but this hearing will be held in Philadelphia, PA. We encourage those of you in the Philly area to take advantage of the rare opportunity to address the Committee in your city.
