Dial And The Decalogue: Alabama Senator Pushes Commandments Amendment

Forget what the Constitution and the courts say, Alabama State Sen. Gerald Dial knows best.

On Tuesday, Dial introduced for the seventh time in his 10 years in office a bill that would amend the state constitution to encourage display of the Ten Commandments in public schools and other governmental buildings.

According to Dial, the Commandments don’t favor any particular religious belief; they’re just “rules we ought to live by.”

New (And Unimproved) Newt: Gingrich Seeks To Topple Secular America

I’ve been reporting on Religious Right meetings for more than two decades now and have had to sit through some pretty nasty stuff. I recall a meeting of the Family Research Council’s “Values Voter Summit” a few years ago where a staff member with the American Family Association explained how Adolf Hitler invented the separation of church and state.

As bad as that was, it wasn’t as annoying as listening to Newt Gingrich. Gingrich is a fixture at these meetings. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve heard him speak. It’s awful, every time.

Tennessee Intolerance: Legislators Propose Jailing Followers Of Islamic Law

In November, voters in Oklahoma approved a misguided state constitutional amendment designed to ban Islamic law – known as Shariah – in the state,

The fact that there was no effort to impose Shariah law in Oklahoma and that even if there were the First Amendment would prevent it did not sway Sooner State voters; 70 percent of them were apparently concerned about a coming wave of mandatory burqa wearing and backed the measure at the polls.

Was America Founded To Be A Christian Nation?: AU’s Oklahoma Chapter Welcomes Debate

Thomas Jefferson once said, “Educate and inform the whole mass of the people...they are the only sure reliance for the preservation of our liberty."

Americans United has taken these words to heart, as it has many other statements made by Jefferson. AU strongly believes that the best way to bring about positive change and preserve religious freedom is to educate Americans on the importance of church-state separation, particularly at the grassroots level.
