Maryland’s Mistake: Vouchers Comes To The Free State

Maryland recently became the latest state to adopt a school voucher program that will benefit mostly religious schools. The state will spend $5 million on the program, which is aimed at low-income students in Baltimore.

The Washington Post is ecstatic. The newspaper, which constantly promotes vouchers on its editorial page, recently published an editorial that reads like a string of talking points from the Cato Institute.

Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I- Conn.) can definitely count on The Washington Post to lend a hand when it comes to his crusade for school vouchers in the District of Columbia.

Today, the Post added to the seemingly endless stream of editorials it has already published in support of the D.C. voucher program, which uses federal funds to pay for tuition at religious and other private schools.

Should taxpayers be forced to subsidize social service programs that discriminate in hiring on religious grounds?

Most Americans would quickly and emphatically say, "No!" If taxpayers of all faiths (and none) are paying for a program, taxpayers of all faiths (and none) should be eligible to work there. Applicants should be judged on their qualifications, not their theological opinions.

Yet former President George W. Bush allowed exactly that kind of job bias in publicly funded programs run by faith-based agencies.
