Alas, Poor Jerry: Falwell Says The Mean Old Media Is Picking On Him

Poor Jerry Falwell Jr.! The media in Lynchburg, Va., is being soooo mean to him. It breaks your heart to read about it.

You might recall that Falwell got himself in a bit of hot water the other day when it came to light that he had secretly videotaped a meeting between university representatives, the mayor and the city manager about the school’s expansion plans and how they might affect local zoning issues.

Memo To Lynchburg: Jerry Falwell Jr. Is Watching You (And Secretly Recording It All)

Better watch what you say if you’re in a meeting with Liberty University Chancellor Jerry Falwell, Jr.

According to a report in the Lynchburg (Va.) News & Advance this week, Falwell secretly videotaped a get-together between university representatives, the mayor and the city manager about the school’s zoning proposals.

The newspaper said Falwell signed off on the recording, which was made by concealing a camera behind some books.

What A Fruitcake!: Falwell Lawyer Serves Up Heaping Helping Of Holiday Humbug

The Christmas decorations went up at my house the weekend after Thanksgiving.

Let's see: wreath on the door, Christmas tree by the stairs, Nativity scene on the sideboard, hammer and sickle on the.... Wait a minute! Where is the darn hammer and sickle? That infamous symbol of the old Soviet Union must be here somewhere.

According to Religious Right pundit Matt Barber, staffers at Americans United and the ACLU are part of a secularist plot to carry on the communists' crusade against religion. The Soviets failed, so we supposedly have taken up the cause.

Falwell Power Play: Jerry's Kids Grease Partisan Political Machine In Lynchburg

Jerry Falwell Jr. seems well on his way toward setting up his own little fundamentalist theocracy in Lynchburg, Va.

Falwell, chancellor of Liberty University, has been working for months to forge students at his school into a voting bloc that will control local elections. According to the Lynchburg News & Advance, as many as 1,700 LU students registered to vote in the city this fall.

October Surprise: The Day Sen. Kennedy Laid Down The (Church-State) Law At Liberty University

U.S. Sen. Ted Kennedy certainly led an interesting life. Known as a champion of the poor and downtrodden, he was also a powerful advocate for religious liberty and church-state separation who was adept at forging unlikely alliances with conservative Republicans.

One of the more unusual episodes in Kennedy's life occurred on Oct. 3, 1983, when the senator spoke at what was then known as Liberty Baptist College in Lynchburg, Va. -- now Liberty University.

That's right – Kennedy once gave a major address at the Rev. Jerry Falwell's school!

Staver Palaver: Falwell Law School's Mean Dean Defames Americans United

Is Americans United for Separation of Church and State "one of the most dangerous organizations in America"?

Mat Staver seems to think so.

Staver, dean of the late Jerry Falwell's Liberty University Law School and president of Liberty Counsel, went on a tiresome tirade about AU in today's edition of One News Now, the wacky Wildmon family's "news service."

What could have provoked Staver's ire?

Liberty Learns A Lesson: Falwell School Accepts AU Advice On Political Clubs

Americans United reacted quickly when word spread recently that officials at Liberty University had revoked university recognition of a student Democratic Party club.

AU, noting that recognition and funding were still being extended to a Republican club on campus, asked the Internal Revenue Service to investigate the matter. Liberty University, as a tax-exempt institution, could not lawfully favor one party over another, Americans United asserted.

Falwell Falsehoods: Liberty U. Chancellor Lies About Americans United

A propensity toward prevarication seems to run in the Falwell family.

Americans United staffers used to repeatedly note that the Rev. Jerry Falwell Sr. once preached a sermon in which he said, "I hope to live to see the day, when, as in the early days of our country, there won't be any public schools. The churches will have taken them over again and Christians will be running them. What a happy day that will be!"

IRS Should Review Liberty University’s Tax-Exempt Status For Partisan Politicking, Says Americans United

Watchdog Group Tells Tax Agency Falwell-Founded School Is Showing Preference For Republicans By Curbing Student Democratic Club

Americans United for Separation of Church and State today asked the Internal Revenue Service to review the tax-exempt status of Liberty University in the wake of the school’s decision to yank official recognition of a student-run Democratic club.

Last week, Liberty officials informed the president of the Democratic club that it is no longer eligible for university recognition, including funding through student activity fees. The goals of the Democratic Party, school officials insisted, are contrary to Liberty’s evangelical Christian outlook.
