Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump addressed Ralph Reed’s Faith & Freedom Coalition this afternoon in Washington, D.C. The Rev. Barry W. Lynn, executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, issued the following statement:
“Donald Trump’s speech to the Faith & Freedom Coalition conference today was typical of the incoherence he often puts forth on religious freedom issues. Trump claims to be for religious liberty, but he trades in Islamophobia and repeatedly implies that all members of the Muslim faith are somehow suspect. Such crude invective offends the spirit of our first freedom.
“Much of Trump’s speech was simply a mishmash of vague proposals and mindless sloganeering designed to pacify the zealots of the Religious Right. The people who belong to Ralph Reed’s Coalition may find this engaging, but anyone who truly values religious freedom as a core American principle can see the paucity of vision here.”
Americans United is a religious liberty watchdog group based in Washington, D.C. Founded in 1947, the organization educates Americans about the importance of church-state separation in safeguarding religious freedom.
