President-Elect Donald Trump has picked many controversial figures to fill his cabinet, and the Senate, must “advise and consent” to these nominations. We are fighting back against three of his picks that we find particularly troubling: Betsy DeVos for Secretary of Education, Senator Jeff Sessions for U.S. Attorney General, and Representative Tom Price for Secretary of Health and Human Services.
Betsy DeVos - Nominee for Secretary of Education
Betsy DeVos was confirmed on Feb. 7. After the Senate vote ended in a 50-50 tie, Vice President Mike Pence, who also serves as President of the Senate, was forced to break the tie in order for her nomination to go through. The final vote was 51-50. This was the first time a vice president has been called to break a tie on a cabinet nomination.
Prior to the vote, Democratic senators had held the Senate floor for almost 24 hours to voice their many serious concerns about Betsy DeVos serving as Secretary of Education. And two Republicans, Sen. Collins (R-ME) and Sen. Murkowski (R-AK), bucked their party and voted against DeVos as well. Although DeVos was confirmed, opposition to her troubling views was heard loud and clear.
Thank you for taking action.
Now, our work to make sure she doesn’t dismantle public education in order to fund private-school vouchers begins in earnest. We’ll keep up the fight and ask you to join us.

Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) - Nominee for Attorney General
On Feb. 8, the Senate voted 52-47 to confirm Sen. Jeff Sessions as U.S. Attorney General following a dramatic debate that included a vote to censure Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) for reading a letter from the late Coretta Scott King, who was critical of Sessions. Many other senators also voiced serious concerns.
Because you took action, they knew all about his troubling record. Thank you.
