It’s Presidents’ Day! Sure, it’s not the most exciting of federal holidays – too cold for fireworks and picnics, and Hallmark doesn’t actually make any cards for it – but it’s a nice break from work for those who get the day off.
The February issue of Church & State contains a story I wrote about 10 great things presidents have said about separation of church and state. Since an isolated quote can be open to interpretation, I provide context and background for each one. Sources are also listed.
Articles from Church & State are posted online at au.org, but if you’re a member of Americans United you get a physical copy of the magazine that includes photos, editorial cartoons and art that are not part of the online version. So, if you’re not a dues-paying member of Americans United, please consider becoming one.
Aside from the magazine, you also get the satisfaction of knowing that you’re helping Americans United achieve its goal of protecting freedom of conscience and ensuring that people are not subjected to religion by the government against their will. You can also get involved locally if there is an AU chapter in your area.
Thomas Jefferson and James Madison would approve.
