AU Backs The March For Science In Support Of Sound Science In Schools And Government

Saturday is the March for Science in Washington, D.C., and Americans United is proud to be an official partner.

We encourage our members, supporters and activists to take part in the March for Science this Saturday, or to join one of the satellite marches around the country. You can download and print an AU sign in support of sound science here.

AU fully supports science .We believe that by adhering to the constitutional principle of church-state separation, public servants and public school teachers are free to believe – or not believe – as they see fit, and can make public policy decisions and teach curricula that are supported by scientific evidence.

We believe public health policy should reflect what medical experts and research tell us, including that birth control and other forms of contraception provide significant health benefits.

We believe that no one should be denied access to medicine or medical services because of someone else’s theology. That’s one of the issues we track through our Protect Thy Neighbor project.

We believe that public schools should educate students on issues such as evolution, climate change and sex education in a way that does not reference religious teachings.

That’s why we continue to fight against attacks on sound science in the public school education system. For example, anti-science bills have recently surfaced in Florida, South Dakota and other states, and AU has been tracking and fighting them, including by sending letters of opposition to state legislators.

On a federal level, Donald J. Trump administration’s also could threaten sound science.

Trump’s Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos, dedicated her career to privatizing public education through school voucher schemes that send taxpayer money to private religious schools that can teach religion in science class, like creationism and intelligent design.

Jerry Falwell Jr. –president of Liberty University – is leading a higher education deregulation task force in the U.S. Education Department. Tom Price, who has voiced support for restricting birth control and health care access in the name of religion, leads the Department of Health and Human Services. And there’s Vice President Mike Pence, who has disparaged the teaching of evolution, backed voucher expansion as Indiana’s governor and supported legislation that could discriminate against LGBTQ people in the name of religion.

Scientific research and healthcare access also are under threat. The Trump administration’s proposed cuts to environmental funding and reproductive healthcare access are concerning.

Join us in standing up to the many threats to sound science by participating in the March for Science this Saturday, April 22, and the People’s Climate March next Saturday, April 29!
